10 años del derrame en Veladero, una herida abierta en la Cordillera de San Juan

On September 13, 2015, at approximately 10:00 a.m., a valve ruptured at the Veladero mine, located in the high mountains of Iglesia department in San Juan. A pipeline transporting a "rich" cyanide solution to the leaching valley failed. The toxic liquid, instead of being contained, was diverted, and a gate that should have been closed was found open due to human error. The cyanide solution escaped and spilled into the Jáchal River basin, a vital tributary for the region. What followed was an "information war" that exposed the fragility of state control and prompted constant protests from residents of Jáchal, Iglesia, and throughout San Juan.
