Inside the Investigation: Moka Cafe Murders

On June 24, 2015, a horrifying act of violence unfolded at Moka Café in Vaughan, Ontario. A masked gunman entered the café, fatally shooting two people and seriously injuring two others before fleeing the scene in a stolen Nissan Versa. A meticulous investigation led York Regional Police to identify Jason Hay, a career criminal recently released from prison. Surveillance, cell phone data, witness tips, and DNA evidence linked Hay to the crime. He was arrested in a high-risk takedown on Hwy 400 on August 14, 2015, alongside accomplice Tashari Bennett. Searches uncovered firearms, a balaclava with Hay's DNA, drugs, and multiple cell phones. Despite extensive efforts, the motive for the shooting remains unknown. In total, investigators executed 40 warrants and conducted over 130 interviews. In May 2018, Jason Hay was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. On July 4, 2018, he was sentenced to consecutive life sentences, making him ineligible for parole for 50 years—the first such sentence in York Region history and only the fifth in Canada. 🔔 Subscribe for more true crime investigations and major case breakthroughs. #TrueCrime #MokaCafeMurders #YorkRegionalPolice #ColdCase #JasonHay #JusticeServed #CanadianCrime #LifeSentence
