2021 Summer Gem Hunt Tournament (Week 3): Lee vs. Gittles

0:00 Game 1 - Citadel - Lee wins 122 to 80 6:28 Game 2 - Wonky Waters - Lee wins 147 to 139 12:20 Game 3 - Concentric - Lee wins 111 to 89 Lee wins match 3-0 my post-match thoughts I got swept! The games were close-ish, but in the end my opponent beat me handi-Lee. (OK that was too easy.) I'm a bit upset at how I played, although I can tell I'm improving at this whole multiplayer thing. I think the result would've been similar, either 3-0 or 3-1, even if I didn't make so many mistakes and had played up to my abilities. Lee was clearly the better multiplayer player, and he played really well throughout the match. The three maps we played really tested a wide range of skills, and Lee performed a lot better and made fewer mistakes overall than I did. In particular, his A-to-B speed and his ability to take risks going for blues were key to his victory. He also took advantage of my mistakes, and he didn't make too many mistakes for me to take advantage of. I have to say that I had a lot of fun, and I want to thank Lee for such a great match! Game 1 - I made the decision to pick Citadel well in advance, just because it's one of the few MP maps Lee didn't have the Ultimate Score on! This pick backfired on me a bit. Lee jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. His ability to go from A-to-B really quickly was the key to this game. It seemed like every time I got to a spawn, Lee had already gobbled up most of the gems. I had a few embarrassing mistakes (like getting caught in the water slide), but I had to take some risks, because going fast is really important on such a huge map, and I had trouble keeping up with Lee, even when I didn't mess up. Game 2 - This game was really close! The water made movement tricky, but both of us seemed to handle it pretty well. I learned a valuable lesson from this game: sometimes you just have to commit to going for a blue. Lee took a lot of risks going for each blue, meaning the only way I could get the blue is if he messed up. The result was that Lee got 9 blues while I got only 4. Game 3 - Since Citadel went poorly, I decided to pick its polar opposite for Game 3. (Also I had gotten the Ultimate Score fairly easily in my pre-match practice.) Concentric has tight movement, gems that are fairly tricky to reach, and many opportunities for mega-marbles. As it turned out, Lee is a master of these skills too. Of the three games, this is the one I feel the worst about. I even forgot where I was a couple times, even though I had practiced the map recently, leading to some unforced OOBs (to go along with all the times Lee knocked me OOB). It probably wouldn't have made a difference, however. He fell OOB a few times (as did I) and missed some high-up yellows (as did I), but overall he didn't make too many major mistakes that I could take advantage of. A margin of 22 points may not seem like much, but it's hard to make up that kind of deficit on this particular map. tl;dr joj
