The Kola Superdeep Borehole is the deepest point ever reached by humans: twelve thousand two hundred and sixty-two meters. That's zero point two percent of the way to the center of the Earth. Up to the Moon, we've traveled thirty thousand times further. And we stopped at the bottom not because we ran out of money or our equipment broke down. We stopped because, at depth, granite ceases to be stone: at one hundred and eighty degrees and three thousand atmospheres, it begins to slowly flow, pulling the drilled shaft back into the hole. The hole closes itself. This film explores why the boundary between solid and liquid runs not through matter, but through time. Why the deepest borehole in the world is only twenty-three centimeters wide. What they actually found in the core (there was no basalt, but they did find water ten kilometers deep and twenty-four species of life dating back two billion years). And why has the depth record stood untouched since 1989, even though Buryats still drill boreholes longer than the Kola Borehole—just sideways? We'll also debunk two myths: a fake recording of "voices from the borehole" and the story of glass supposedly flowing down into old cathedrals.
