The flea beetle is increasingly becoming one of the biggest problems in rapeseed cultivation. This presentation will address current resistance studies showing that pyrethroids are practically no longer effective against the flea beetle in Rhineland-Palatinate and adjacent regions. The flea beetles tested exhibited high-grade KDR or super-KDR resistance, with resistance levels significantly exceeding the permitted application rate. Therefore, the central question is how rapeseed can still be safely brought through its early growth stages in the future. Topics discussed include an adjusted sowing date, reliable emergence, varieties suitable for early sowing, the role of herbicide strategies, growth regulators and autumn nitrogen fertilization, as well as options for controlling the larvae. It is particularly important that the rapeseed is already well-developed and has formed at least one pair of true leaves when the flea beetles arrive. Furthermore, the article explains why controlling the larvae becomes significantly more challenging in autumn, the importance of larval monitoring, and why products like Minecto Gold or Exirel should only be considered as part of a comprehensive approach. The crucial point remains: the better the rapeseed is supplied with nutrients in autumn and spring, the less damage will be caused by the flea beetle.
