King Rhobar II needs magical ore to forge powerful weapons for his army. To maximize production, he turns the island of Khorinis's ore mines into a massive penal colony. To ensure no prisoner escapes, the King commands the realm's most powerful mages to cast a magical barrier over the area. However, something goes wrong. The Barrier expands far beyond its intended size, trapping the mages inside and giving the prisoners the chance to revolt. The convicts take control of the mines, forcing the King to trade luxury goods, food, and women just to keep the ore flowing.
