Kelvin Torbert Feature (Michigan's Mr. Basketball - 2001)

Aired March 24, 2001 - Flint Northwestern's Kelvin Torbert is one of the most highly touted prospects to come out of Michigan in the new millennium. Considered the No. 2 prospect in the country according to RSCI rankings (behind Eddy Curry), the 6-foot-4, 220-pound high-rising Torbert averaged 25.1 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game his senior year, drawing interest from both the NBA and an endless list of NCAA Division I powerhouses. Following a standout 21-point performance in the McDonald's High School All-American Game, Torbert opted to put the NBA on hold, choosing to head to East Lansing to play for Tom Izzo and the defending NCAA champion Michigan State Spartans. With MSU, Torbert rounded into an effective four-year contributor, falling short of the lofty expectations placed upon him but playing a key role for teams that went as deep as the Final Four in 2005, before losing to a loaded North Carolina team. Torbert scored 1,195 points over the course of his college career, averaging 9.3 points per game in all (peaking at 10.7 points per game his junior year). While a number of his 2001 contemporaries—Eddy Curry, Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, DaSagana Diop—entered in the NBA straight out of high school in 2001, Torbert found himself going undrafted in 2005.
