Let's figure out where the creators hit the mark and where they indulged in Hollywood fantasy. Let's start with the main character. Manfred von Richthofen is an absolute legend, the top ace of World War I, with 80 official victories. Holy shit, imagine, he shot down 80 planes. And yes, he really did paint his Fokker Dr. I triplane a poisonous red. But not for cheap show-offs, but for purely practical reasons: to prevent friendly forces from shooting them down in the chaos, and to allow the enemy to understand from afar who they were dealing with. But the film overdid the hero's character. On screen, we see a refined romantic who is burdened by carnage, doubts the justice of war, and almost becomes a pacifist. In reality, things were much harsher. Richthofen was a hereditary Prussian soldier to the core. Discipline, a hunter's passion, and loyalty to the Kaiser—that was his foundation. He genuinely loved his work. Yes, he respected worthy enemies and buried his fallen enemies with honors (as was the norm at the time), but he was no slob and was not known for his pacifism. What makes the film truly worthy of applause is the flight physics. No crazy "Fast and Furious"-style somersaults in plywood planes. The flight model looks impressive: the First World War aircraft are executing classic banked turns, trying to simply get behind each other. The pilots' vulnerability is also perfectly conveyed. There's no armor, the cockpits are exposed to all winds, and a few splashes of engine oil in your face from the unreliable engine are commonplace. A bullet in the fuel tank and you're on fire; a bullet in the wing and the percale (the fabric used to cover the wings) is torn to shreds.
