8 Proven Sand Riding Tips for ADV Motorcycle Riders
Making a video about sand riding tips for ADV motorcycle riders has been on my to-do list for too long. So today, we dive into my favorite activity on my ADV motorcycle ... sand riding! As an ADV motorcycle coach, I often have clients ask me to teach them how to ride sand. Sand riding can be both thrilling and challenging, and it's essential to have the right skills to tackle this terrain with confidence. 00:00 Overview of tips 01:19 Tip 1 Momentum 02:22 Tip 2 Reading Sand 03:40 Tip 3 Vision 04:28 Tip 4 Body Position 05:23 Tip 5 2nd Gear 06:07 Tip 6 Stopping 06:46 Tip 7 Tire Pressure 08:05 Tip 8 Walk the Bike 08:26 Conclusion & Bloopers Here are my 8 essential tips for ADV motorcycle riders to master sand riding: 1. Use Momentum Wisely When riding your ADV motorcycle in sand, it's important to know how to use momentum wisely. We need to power through sections of soft or challenging sand and then get back to a comfortable speed. If you ride too fast, it can be overwhelming for your brain to process everything that is going on. At some point, you will run out of speed or skillZ. 2. Read the Sand Reading the sand is an essential skill for sand riding and becomes easier with experience. Learn to look for motorcycle routes that avoid soft or deep sand, and use your peripheral vision to anticipate changes in texture. Understanding the terrain can help you identify when and how to increase your momentum and what body positioning is needed. 3. Use Good Vision Good vision is crucial when riding an ADV motorcycle in sand. Use a visor or goggles to avoid to protect your eyes. Look ahead to find the best route possible and maintain a safe distance from other riders to avoid dust clouds. 4. Use Correct Body Position Correct body positioning is essential for maintaining balance and control when riding in sand. Active balance, weighting the correct foot peg instantly when the bike wobbles can keep you upright and online. This is where having the lower legs in contact with the bike is essential. 5. Choose the Right Gear Choosing the right gear can make a big difference when riding in sand. Second gear is my most common gear for restarting the bike. A higher gear can be used on straightaways or hardpack sand to maintain momentum. 6. Adjust Tire Pressure Adjusting the motorcycle tire pressure is crucial when riding in sand. Lowering the tire pressure provides a larger contact patch and increases traction. However, be cautious not to lower the pressure too much, as it may cause the tire to come off the rim. 7. Know Where to Stop Stopping in sand can be tricky. Look for a flat, hard surface to stop the bike and avoid stopping on a slope or soft sand with the front tire higher than the rear tire. 8. Know When to Walk Sometimes walking the bike can be more efficient than trying to ride the bike in deep or soft sand. Taking your body weight off the bike can help prevent it from getting stuck and making more work for yourself. Knowing when to walk the bike is essential for sand riding. Walk the bike in as straight a line as possible and keep your legs from getting caught up in the bike or slipping on the soft sand as the rear tire spins. In conclusion, mastering sand riding is essential for ADV motorcycle riders who wish to explore remote areas. By using these 8 essential tips, riders can conquer sand riding with confidence and enjoy the thrill of the ride. Remember, practice makes perfect, so start slowly and gradually build your skills. With patience and perseverance, you can become an expert in sand riding and enjoy the freedom and adventure of off-road riding.
