The Story of David David, a young shepherd from the fields of Bethlehem, rose to become king of Israel. David was described as “glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features” and he was “well spoken.” 1 SAMUEL 16:12, 18 (1 Samuel 18:5) A story you know Most people have heard of the famous fight between David and Goliath—an inexperienced boy against a battle-hardened giant who stood between 9 and 11 feet tall. His shield alone weighed over 125 pounds and the tip of his spear weighed about 15 pounds. Goliath cursed God and the people of Israel. Between the ages of 14 and 16, David volunteered to fight the giant using only a sling. Modern testing has shown that a skilled adult can hurl a 2- to 3-inch stone at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour. With great accuracy, the young man killed Goliath with a single stone. David and Goliath are more than an underdog story about defeating an invincible opponent. It is about God using David in battle. A Story You Don’t Know To fully understand the story of David, it is sometimes necessary to follow a story that is skipped over, along with connections that appear in several books of the Old and New Testaments. One of these stories begins long before David’s birth. It is a footnote to the famous Battle of Jericho, which involves a prostitute named Rahab. In Joshua chapter 2, we are told that Rahab hid two Israelite spies sent before the destruction of Jericho. Because Rahab hid them, the soldiers looking for the spies could not find them. For this, she was blessed by God. Rahab is mentioned again in the Old Testament. Although she was not born a Jew, Rahab converted, and according to the genealogy in Ruth 4, Rahab married Salmon, a prince of Judah, who later became the great-grandfather of David. This is significant because this Davidic connection places Rahab in the family tree of Jesus. She, along with David, is included in Jesus’ genealogy (Matthew 1:4-6). This is one of the most amazing details about his blood relationship and the meaning of grace: a prostitute was included in Jesus’ earthly family. David Becomes King When David was young, Samuel anointed him, promising that God would one day make David king. David spent many years tending sheep, waiting on God. Then things happened. David played the harp for Saul. He killed Goliath. Saul made David the commander of the army. David was great in Saul's army. But jealousy and fear crept into Saul. "Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had departed from Saul." (1 Samuel 18:12 ESV) Saul banished David. Men gathered around David over time. Years later, the Philistines killed Saul and Jonathan. David mourned the loss of Saul and Jonathan. (2 Samuel 1:11,12) David was crowned king. DAVID'S RULE Consolidation: David became king of Judah at age 30. Seven years later, Israel and Judah united under David's rule. City of David: The Jebusites, a foreign tribe, controlled Jerusalem. David captured Jerusalem and made it his kingdom's capital. Fulfilled Promise: Early, David defended the kingdom against the Philistines. Later, he extended the kingdom by defeating the Moabites and Hadadezer, King of Zobah. David's kingdom included the land promised to Abraham. A New Home: David brought the Ark to Jerusalem, celebrating all the way. Rule: David organized the kingdom. He established officials, prepared for the temple's construction and organized the Levites and priests. Loyalty: David showed his loyalty by providing for Jonathan's disabled son, Mephibosheth. Justice: Joshua established a truce between Israel and the Gibeonites. Saul had tried to decimate them. David made reparations. Intrigue: Amnon, David's first born son raped his beautiful half sister, Tamar. David did not punish Amnon. Absalom, Tamar's brother, plotted revenge. Two years later, Absalom had Amnon murdered when he was drunk. Power Struggle: Absalom tried to wrestle power from David. When David was old, Adonijah, another son, tried to usurp the throne from Solomon.
