Why does this music sound so ancient and calming? For once, there's a good, simple answer to that: It's because this track is composed entirely of notes from the natural harmonic series. In a nutshell, that means that it's about as close to "pure" or "natural" music as you can get. There's nothing extra. No rhythm, no harmony, no melody, just a single note. Yes, you can hear more than one note playing in the track, but every note that you hear is just an overtone of the fundamental note. Basically, every sound that you hear in the world is composed of this same series of intervals above the fundamental. In some sounds the overtones are more audible than in others. For example, you might have noticed that you can pick out multiple notes in the sound of a plane flying overhead, or an oscillating fan. Or if you hit a very low note on a grand piano and listen very hard, you can hear these same notes resonating above it. So, musically, this track is about as simple as it gets, there's nothing to it except the natural overtones of one note.
