LO ZUCCHERIFICIO DI PONTELONGO INVESTE NEL FUTURO

Since 1910, Pontelongo has been the sugar capital of Veneto. A centuries-old relationship exists between the town of Saccisica and its sugar factory, which renews its cooperation agreement every summer, from late June to mid-October, during the beet season. The large plant, spanning 40 hectares, employs 95 people permanently, 20 of whom are Pontelongo residents, rising to 110 during the summer harvest. The countryside produces a lot of sugar beet: up to 15,000 tons are harvested daily, for a total of 1,800 tons of product. Sugar, of course, dominates, but it's not just the processing. Pontelongo's sugar has the distinction of being 100% Italian, but for this very reason, it suffers from the same problems as the local area. The 2022 drought was a real scourge for the Piovese countryside: the sugar factory's production plummeted, dropping from around 100,000 tons to 60,000. Despite mixed fortunes, the sugar factory has continued to operate for 113 years and continues to plan for future development.
