Today we're reviewing a professional thickness gauge from R&D, model TC100. There will be a full review, as well as tests on several cars. The thickness gauge comes in a convenient phone-style box and a handy carrying case. The gauge uses two sensors: an electromagnetic sensor and a vortex sensor. It can measure both iron and aluminum surfaces, which is what we need for our paintwork testing. The gauge provides highly accurate readings and comes with two backing plates: aluminum and metal. These backing plates come with five calibration films of varying thicknesses. It's already calibrated at the factory, but if you haven't used it for a long time, it's best to recalibrate it. It runs on a 12V battery, which isn't included. It measures in microns and milliinches, but we need microns. We'll now calibrate the thickness gauge, and I'll also explain which button does what. The ZERO button resets the display when you're taking measurements. The MODE button changes whether we're taking one-time or continuous measurements. If SNG is a one-time measurement, if CON is a continuous measurement. The UM/MILL button switches units between microns and milliinches. UM is microns, MIL is milliinches. To calibrate, switch to CON mode. Take a metal plate, hold it there, and press the ZERO button. 0 should appear, which is without film.
