The Bank Indonesia Board of Governors' meeting in June 2026 decided to raise the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points (bps). This policy increased the BI Rate by 100 basis points to 5.75% since May 2026. Senior Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Destry Damayanti, stated that BI's interest rate policy is part of the central bank's mandate to maintain the stability of Indonesia's financial system. Amidst enormous global pressure, BI prioritizes stability while ensuring measures to stimulate growth. The 100 basis point increase in the BI Rate, BI's monetary instrument for maintaining stability, was also accompanied by the implementation of macroprudential policies through incentives for banks willing to channel credit to priority sectors, which already amounted to IDR 420 trillion. In the payment system, BI provided relief for MSME transactions and financial market deepening, measures expected to maintain the stability of the Rupiah exchange rate. Amidst global uncertainty, this has led to a strengthening of the Dollar Index and pressure on major global currencies, including the Rupiah. Therefore, the BI Rate increase is expected to increase foreign investor appeal for Rupiah instruments, with net inflows in SBN and SRBI reaching over 103 trillion Rupiah as of June 2026. BI also highlighted geopolitical developments in the Middle East, which have led to rising energy prices, which in turn have led to increases in non-subsidized fuel prices, which could drive up inflation. On the other hand, rising commodity prices, such as coal, present an opportunity to increase the country's foreign exchange reserves.
