SHUDRA VS DALIT: 300 SAAL PURANA ITIHAS AUR VARNA VYAVASTHA | AMIT SHUMERA SHUDRA VS DALIT: 300 Years Old History and Varna Vyavastha Description: This is the story of the difference between Shudra and Dalit, deeply connected to the development of the Varna System and events that took place around 300–400 CE (approximately 300 years old in the context of untouchability's firm establishment). Thousands of years ago, people in India performed different occupations — making clay pots, cutting hair, farming, animal husbandry, and trading. Around 3,500 years ago, when the Aryans came to India, the Rigveda (especially the Purusha Sukta) described the four-fold Varna system: Brahmin (from mouth), Kshatriya (from arms), Vaishya (from thighs), and Shudra (from feet). Shudras were part of the four Varnas. They lived inside the villages and performed service and labour work for the upper three Varnas (farming, household chores, etc.). They were not slaves but the lowest stratum within the social order. However, people who lived outside the villages mainly worked as security guards for the villages (protecting from night attacks). In return, villagers gave them food and some payment. These people had less connection with Vedic rituals and Varna rules. At that time, everyone — including Vedic people and Brahmins — ate beef and offered cows in sacrifice (references in Rigveda and Brahmanas). With the rise of Buddhism, the situation changed. Buddhists emphasized non-violence and discouraged cow sacrifice. Later, Brahmins declared the cow sacred and stopped beef-eating and cow sacrifice. But many people living outside the villages continued eating beef and following old traditions. Some of them also adopted Buddhism. According to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, these were the “broken men” (defeated or Buddhist-leaning groups). Over time (around 300–400 CE), the Vedic society branded them as untouchable (Achhut). They came to be known as Dalits. Key Difference: Shudra: Inside the Varna system, lived inside villages, touchable. Dalit: Outside the Varna system, lived outside villages, considered untouchable and most exploited. During the Mughal and British periods, many Dalits converted to Islam or Christianity because they had no rights to education, land, or good jobs in Hindu society. Later, the Shuddhi movement, Poona Pact (1932), and the Indian Constitution (1950) with reservations brought Dalits into the Hindu fold as Scheduled Castes.
