I witnessed 500 years of German history. And nothing prepared me for any of it. 🏰 From a monk with a hammer in 1517 to a wall falling in 1989. Germany has the most dramatic history of any nation on Earth. And I was there for all of it. What I witnessed across 500 years: ⛪ A monk nailing 95 arguments to a church door in 1517 and splitting Christianity forever 🔨 One man standing completely alone against the entire Holy Roman Empire refusing to take back a single word 🏰 Colditz Castle and the most audacious escape plans in all of World War Two 🧱 A city divided overnight while its people slept in 1961 🌍 Families separated at dawn with no warning and no way across 😢 A nation sending children to war in 1944 in uniforms that did not even fit them ⚖️ The trials that created international law as we know it 🎉 The night the wall came down and strangers embraced on top of it No country on Earth has gone from the heights of civilization to the depths of destruction and back again the way Germany has. Standing at the Berlin Wall as it came down. Then standing at that church door where it all began 500 years before. I finally understand Germany.
