Petare was founded on February 17, 1621: its name originates from the words "pet" and "are," both belonging to the Carib language spoken by the Mariche indigenous people, pre-Columbian inhabitants of the area now east of Caracas. These two words mean "face" and "river" respectively, which allows us to conclude that Petare means "facing the river," a clear reference to the geographical location of the original settlement, situated on the banks of the Guaire River (the main body of water in the Caracas valley) and the Caurimare stream. 🇺🇸 I went for a walk through the Historic Center of Petare!!
