Waldhof Mannheim - MSV Duisburg Highlights 3. Liga, 29. Spieltag | Sportschau Fußball
MSV Duisburg secured a 4-1 (2-0) victory against SV Waldhof Mannheim after an efficient and composed performance. The team from the Rhine-Neckar region played attractive football at times, but coach Luc Holtz's side lacked the final touch. _________________________________________________________________________________ Bundesliga, DFB Cup, international matches: Here we bring you the highlights – completely ad-free. ...] Subscribe to this channel: https://www.youtube.com/@SportschauFu... Sports news at: https://www.sportschau.de/ While MSV Duisburg, currently fourth with 60 points from 33 games, can still hope for promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, SV Waldhof Mannheim (47 points) is currently in eleventh place. For SV Waldhof Mannheim, the match against MSV Duisburg, despite their recent four-game unbeaten run (including the regional cup), wasn't particularly crucial in terms of league position. The pressure was significantly greater for Duisburg, however. The Zebras had recently lost some ground in the 3. Liga promotion race. Waldhof fans at Mannheim's Carl-Benz-Stadion had reason to celebrate even before kickoff, as it was announced that fan favorite Terrence Boyd had extended his contract, which was due to expire at the end of the season, until 2027. "The big guy just can't quit," the club commented. The 35-year-old striker, who started as a substitute against MSV, had originally announced his intention to retire after the current season and move from the pitch to the coaching bench. Accordingly, SVW started the match with renewed energy and had early chances through Kushtrim Asallari and Lovis Bierschenk (3'). The hosts were dealt a cold shower shortly after: Kother put MSV Duisburg ahead in the 8th minute after a close-range pass from Joshua Bitter, having previously rounded Waldhof Mannheim goalkeeper Thijmen Nijhuis. In the 15th minute, Mannheim appealed for a penalty when Duisburg's Rasim Bulic brought down SVW striker Masca in an aerial duel on the edge of his own penalty area, but referee Konrad Oldhafer waved play on, as the MSV player had made contact with both the ball and his opponent. A justifiable decision. Around ten minutes later, goalkeeper Maximilian Braune preserved Duisburg's narrow lead, making a superb one-handed save from a Bierschenk shot from just under 14 meters (24th minute). Otherwise, the Zebras were generally solid defensively, conceding little and waiting for counter-attacking opportunities. And that's exactly how the second goal for the Meiderich side came about: Mannheim's Vincent Thill lost possession to MSV striker Lobinger just behind the halfway line in his own half. The former Kaiserslautern player raced clear towards the Waldhof goal and hit the post. Kother pounced on the rebound, firing a powerful shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0 for the visitors. That was the score at halftime. Shortly after the break, Lobinger increased MSV Duisburg's lead to 3-0 after a brilliant through ball from Florian Krüger. The 27-year-old chipped the ball delicately and with impressive technique over Nijhuis (48'). Waldhof responded just over ten minutes later when substitute Lohkemper pulled one back from the right side of the box to make it 3-1 (61'). Both teams then had good chances. Patrick Sussek missed a close-range opportunity for the visitors (65'), before fellow substitute Boyd's shot went just wide of the Duisburg goal (67'). The game settled down somewhat in the closing stages. Duisburg focused on controlling the game, while Werder Bremen lacked the means to mount a comeback. Töpken ultimately finished off a counter-attack to make it 4-1. Given their efficiency and more composed play, the Zebras' away victory was deserved, even if the scoreline flattered them somewhat. #sportschaufußball
