Delicious Swedish Christmas Ham | JULSKINKA
Swedish Christmas ham (julskinka) is the centerpiece of the traditional buffet that is eaten on Christmas eve. And as it should; it’s delicious! It takes some planning in advance, but the end result is definitely worth it. I start by seasoning the raw ham with equal parts salt and sugar and let it brine in the fridge for 48 hours. You can leave it for longer if you want, but two days should be more than enough. Also, if you don’t have the time, you can skip this step. However, it does bring some extra flavor to the meat. I then let the ham simmer with spices and beer for a couple of hours until it reaches an internal temperature of 68°C (154°F). This is enough to cook the ham without making it dry. Just make sure that the temperature is low, so that it simmers but isn’t boiling. The ham gets finished off with an amazing mustard glaze, and then goes into the oven to broil at 220°C (430°F) for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Done! This ham can be eaten in many different ways. If you want to eat it like a true Swede, put it on a piece of crispbread (or any other type of bread that you like), add some more mustard, and enjoy.
