"El jardín de la neurología: lo bello, el arte y el cerebro" por Javier de Felipe

Lecture "The Garden of Neurology: Beauty, Art, and the Brain," presented by Javier de Felipe (Spanish National Research Council) on May 7, 2025, as part of the lecture series "Portrait of a Brain: Artists. From Neurons to Creativity." "The Garden of Neurology: Beauty, Art, and the Brain" The brain is like a dense forest, a complex and seemingly impenetrable terrain of neurons whose interaction gives rise to cognition and behavior. The great challenge lies in discovering its mysteries; that is, in figuring out how neurons are structured and connected as a necessary, though not sufficient, condition for understanding the essence of our humanity. This lecture will showcase images from the legacy of Santiago Ramón y Cajal that, in an aesthetic way, represent important concepts and discoveries in the field of neuroscience, thus fulfilling one of the author's main objectives: to show the reader that the study of the nervous system is not only relevant because it represents one of the great challenges of research, but also because of its unexpected natural beauty. "Portrait of a Brain: The Artists. From Neurons to Creativity" Creativity is a bridge that unites the shores of imagination and memory. Attributed to artists, it belongs to everyone. This lecture series proposes a journey through creativity, interweaving art with neuroscience. Once again, science is a guest at the Museum and an interpreter of aspects of the collections. The first lecture, given by Dr. Nazareth Castellanos, explores the neuroscience of artistic creativity and the creativity that captures the emotions we observe in others. The second lecture, given by Dr. Susana Carmona, explores brain changes during the creative process of motherhood. A conversation between Drs. Nazareth Castellanos and Fernando Maestú about creativity under the conditions of aging comprises the third session, followed by the lecture that concludes the series: "The Garden of Neurology," given by Dr. Javier de Felipe. The masterful drawings of nerve tissue by Santiago Ramón y Cajal will serve as a guide to the arguments presented in this final session. "Portrait of a Brain: The Artists.
