HOW TO: PASS INSTRUMENTS
HOW TO PASS INSTRUMENTS. Hey guys! I know it may seem like "wow, passing instruments? easy!" lol if you don't know how to pass instruments, it will show and it might make surgeons mad if you don't catch up on it. Passing instruments may be cumbersome but I think its important to address it. It sounds so simple but you CAN pass instruments wrong. This can lead to injury if you're not paying attention. I got sliced passing the sharp senns wrong. Got snagged with a needle drive with a needle. Did not know how to pass instruments to a lefty surgeon. etc. ⚕ Surgical tech tips: 1. Pay attention to how the surgeon will use the instrument. If you pass it and he turns it, then you have to turn it when you pass it again. 2. If an instrument is double ended with different sizes, look at the anatomy and see how deep they are in the belly. If superficial, use the shorter end and vice versa. 3. Practice how to pass to a lefty! Here's a video: • HOW TO: LOAD A NEEDLE FOR RIGHTY AND LEFTY... 4. If an instrument is sharp, make sure that when you pass it, the surgeon SEES you pass it. Have a good grip on it until your surgeon grabs a hold of it. I would usually say something like, "KNIFE! BLADE! SHARP!" EVERYTIME! This is very important when you pass a blade, an amputation knife or anything that is sharp. 5. Lock the instruments in one ratchet and slap it on their hand. Nothing aggressive. Just to established that he has grip. 6. Practice cutting sutures with your non dominant hand and same goes to loading sutures with 1 hand AND/OR your non dominant hand. 7. There is a wrong way of holding a scissor. A surgeon will correct you if you do it wrong and they're usually really nice about it. ⚕ I hope the tips are helpful and I'm sure there's more where that came from ☺ I want you guys to be prepared for EVERYTHING. It may or may not happen to you but it's better to be prepared than to be a blank slate. You got this! ⚕ Goodluck future ST!
