What we think of as Middle-Eastern music was once also the music of Europe, and the ancient Romans of Late Antiquity sang and wrote melodies in ways Arabs and Iranians still do today. What's more, many of the elements that we associate with the Middle-Eastern sound seemed to have traveled from West to East, instead of the opposite that we take for granted.
