Lhokseumawe was once known as the "Petro Dollar City" from the 1980s to 1990s. The city's existence was closely tied to the emergence of the Samudera Pasai Kingdom around the 13th century. Today, the city thrives in trade, industry, and services. However, the nickname "Petro Dollar City" appears to be irrelevant today. This is partly due to the low employment rate among local workers compared to the absorption of workers from outside the region. Therefore, the Lhokseumawe City government is currently preparing regulations to ensure that all oil and gas industries opened there can absorb local workers.
