Some enjoy it, others dislike its smell. Garlic is polarizing. But the bulb has become indispensable in many kitchens. Within Europe, Spain is the largest garlic producer, while worldwide, around 80 percent of internationally traded garlic comes from China. GARLIC CULTIVATION AND IMPORT In some provinces, people live almost exclusively from garlic cultivation. There, one field stretches after another. After harvesting, garlic is dried in waves by the roadside. With proper storage, the root bulb can be kept for about seven months. GARLIC FROM SPAIN AND CHINA TESTED Included: dried garlic from China (Lidl, Netto, Real, Kaufland) and from Spain (Penny, Edeka, Aldi SĂźd), as well as organic garlic from Rewe. How seriously are the EU maximum levels for toxic substances taken, and can this vegetable really be eaten without worry? TOXICIDES AND DANGEROUS MOLD TOXINS Even small amounts of mold in food can be problematic. They can cause serious organ damage, for example, to the liver and kidneys. Marktcheck has samples tested for pesticide residues in a laboratory. WHAT COMES WITH THE ANNOYING ODOR AND HOW CAN IT BE AVOIDED? Cutting the cloves releases a garlic aroma compound. During digestion, this aroma compound is converted into sulfur compounds, creating the typical garlic odor in humans. And what helps against it?
