Why Nintendo Hates Fan Games
Last week, one Nintendo fan gave the world a glimpse at a fully working PC port of Super Mario 64. This week, it is gone. Why? Because Nintendo hates fan games with a fiery passion, and does everything possible, including deploying lawyers, to prevent gamers from making Nintendo tribute games. Pokemon Uranium, Another Metroid 2 Remake, and countless other fan works have suffered a similar fate. In researching this video, we found literally thousands of fan works that have been taken down by Nintendo, thanks to the wonderful DMCA (Digital Millennial Copyright Act) that makes it quick and easy for companies to remove copyrighted works from the internet. We're not huge fans of current copyright law here. Our videos go out copyright free, under a Creative Commons license. Apologies if we seem a little harsh on Nintendo here. We just don't really buy Satoru Iwata's excuse that fan games "diminish the dignity" of Nintendo brands. Nor do we feel that fan games provide any genuine competition to legitimate Nintendo offerings. Here's hoping that Nintendo will loosen up in the future and stop treating fan works like some kind of terrible threat. In the meantime, stay safe.
