The “Scary” Hospice Symptoms Everyone Misunderstands
When someone is on hospice, a lot of the things you see can feel scary if you’ve never been around death before. Sleeping all the time. Not eating or drinking much. Confusion. Restlessness. Pain. Changes in breathing. Families often panic and wonder why no one is doing anything about it. In this video, I walk you through what’s actually happening inside the body when these symptoms show up, and why so many of them are normal and expected in the dying process. I explain why eating and drinking naturally slow down, why the brain shuts off hunger and thirst, why confusion and agitation can happen as organs fail or medications change, and why hospice teams don’t rush to run tests the way hospitals do. We also talk honestly about pain and shortness of breath, two of the biggest fears people have about dying. I explain how hospice manages pain aggressively and why dying itself is usually not painful. I also explain what “air hunger” really is, why it happens, and how quickly it can usually be relieved with the right care. My goal is to help you shift your perspective so these symptoms feel less frightening and more understandable, whether you’re caring for someone on hospice or thinking about what the end of life might look like for yourself or someone you love.
