In this series, I discuss how the idea of ​​the spiritual mentor evolved in the ancient Indian tradition: from the earliest layers of the Rig Veda to the Atharva Veda, the Brahmanas, the Aranyakas, the Upanishads, and the Dharma Shastras. In the early Vedic environment, the familiar image of the guru as a personal spiritual teacher guiding the disciple to liberation was not yet present. The priest, the master of ritual, the keeper of the correct word and rite, was more important. But gradually, the emphasis shifted from external ritual to knowledge, internal discipline, the transmission of teaching, and the personal connection between teacher and disciple. A particularly important shift occurs in the Upanishads. Here, the mentor no longer simply explains ritual, but helps the disciple understand the profound nature of reality, atman, Brahman, and liberation. It was in this environment that the type of spiritual guidance that would later become central to Vedanta, yoga, and many Hindu traditions began to take shape.
