Édith Piaf — De l'enfant aveugle des rues à la légende éternelle de la France!
More than sixty years after her death, Édith Piaf remains the greatest voice in French song and one of the most moving artists of the twentieth century. Born into abject poverty, marked from childhood by abandonment, blindness, and destitution, she rose, by the sheer force of her extraordinary voice, to the very top of the world's greatest stages. In this biographical documentary, Étienne Beaumont retraces the entire life of this exceptional woman. From the brothel in Normandy where a blind child regained her sight, to the sidewalks of Belleville and Pigalle where her voice was born; from her discovery by Louis Leplée to the scandal that nearly destroyed everything; from her meeting with Raymond Asso, who transformed her into a true artist, to the turbulent years of the Occupation; from her great and tragic love for Marcel Cerdan to her long descent into illness and suffering. From her miraculous return to the Olympia to that final autumn when the people of Paris, against the Church's wishes, accompanied her by the hundreds of thousands to Père-Lachaise Cemetery. This account aims to be both rigorous and engaging. It illuminates the historical and cultural context of the first half of the twentieth century, the lives of street performers, the world of Parisian music halls, the hardships of war, and the history of French song. The controversial moments of her life are presented with nuance, highlighting the existence of different versions and interpretations. A plunge into the destiny of a small woman in a black dress who, alone under a spotlight, offered the world something rare and genuine. Channel hosted by Étienne Beaumont.
