Today, we're in the heart of Bangalore, on the iconic Millers Road, to explore a mosque that beautifully combines history, architecture, and faith—Masjid-e-Khadria. Nestled quietly on Millers Road stands a mosque that has witnessed the British Raj, Mahatma Gandhi's public address, and Indian Independence. Masjid-e-Khadria is a magnificent mosque located in the heart of Bangalore, Karnataka. It is situated inside the Khuddus Saheb Eidgah grounds on Millers Road. Rewind to the British era: this area, now bustling with life, was once dense forestland. At that time, Millers Road marked the edge of the Bangalore Cantonment. The railway lines were visible, there were no railway gates, and the area was sparsely populated. Few homes existed here for British officials. No noise. Just wilderness and visionaries. A short distance from here is Benson Town and Bangalore Cantonment Railway Station. During this period, Quddus Saheb was appointed Sar Qazi of Bangalore by the British, a position that was both honorary and significant. A man of great vision, he recognized the spiritual and community needs of Muslims in the city. He not only rebuilt the Jumma Masjid in Shivajinagar but also purchased land that is now known as the Khuddus Saheb Eidgah and the Khuddus Saheb Qabrastan. One such visionary was Quddus Saheb, who was appointed the Sar Qazi of Bangalore by the British government. Although this was an honorary title, it came with significant responsibilities within the community. Quddus Saheb was not just a scholar; he was also a planner. Through his contributions, he successfully reconstructed the Jumma Masjid in Shivajinagar and acquired land for burial and Eid prayers. Today, the Quddus Saab Idgah and Qabrastan stand as testaments to his efforts. Quddus Saheb passed away on May 21, 1905. His legacy, however, continues to live on in every brick of this sacred ground. Years later, on August 21, 1920, Mahatma Gandhi visited Bangalore and addressed a large gathering at the Eidgah Khuddus Saheb as part of the Non-Cooperation Movement. In the subsequent years, a few philanthropic individuals built a modest mosque in one corner of the Eidgah grounds—this was before any boundary walls had been constructed. A significant new chapter began in 1981 when Mohammad Abdulla Basha undertook the construction of Masjid-e-Khadria in memory of his father, Abdul Khader. Abdul Khader, a respected industrialist in Bangalore, had previously run a prominent glass factory in the city. Designed by the renowned architect Sajjad Ali Khan, Masjid-e-Khadria is a striking example of grand Islamic architecture. Its intricate geometric patterns, onion-shaped domes, and tall minarets standing at each of the four corners evoke a timeless elegance. The mosque's entrance features a majestic arch adorned with elaborate calligraphy, immediately capturing the attention of all who approach. Set amidst landscaped gardens and soothing fountains, the mosque offers a serene and spiritual environment. Wide, welcoming pathways guide visitors from the impressive entrance arch to the main prayer complex, enhancing both the aesthetic and functional design. The main prayer hall accommodates over 2,100 worshippers, with three large 16-foot-wide doors facing the north, south, and east. An additional 1,980 musallis can be accommodated on the first floor, accessible via three broad staircases that ensure smooth and organized movement throughout the space. Until 2016, the grounds of Masjid-e-Khadria also served as the staging area for Bangalore’s Haj camps, where aspiring pilgrims gathered in preparation for the sacred journey of a lifetime. But Masjid-e-Khadria is more than just a mosque. It is a reflection of Bangalore’s spirit—a symbol of unity, vision, and enduring heritage. Its impact extends far beyond its elegant structure, touching lives through the dreams and dedication of those who built it.
