In the far southeast of Senegal, specifically near the city of Kédougou, we discovered a region completely different from the common image of Senegal… a place known as the land of the Bassari. Several ethnic groups have lived here for centuries, including the Bedik and the Bassari people, in isolated mountain villages that preserve a traditional way of life based on agriculture and collective work. We randomly chose a village on the map… and it was Ndebou. A local family welcomed us as if we were part of them. We joined them in visiting the fields and discovered the cultivation of cotton, millet, and peanuts. We learned about a farming system that depends entirely on seasons and rainfall. And we saw how knowledge is passed down from elders to the younger generations, year after year. At sunset, we entered another world… The traditional kitchen, the wood fire, and the preparation of dinner from the land’s own produce. And in the morning, before saying goodbye, we shared one last meal with them… Simple moments, yet deeply meaningful. This was not just a village visit… It was a human experience in the heart of Senegal’s mountains, where the land, family, and elders still form the foundation of daily life.
