Despite the unusually hot weather on Sunday, May 24th, numerous visitors attended the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Volunteer Fire Brigade of Mirano (VE). The oval square in Piazza Martiri della Libertà, overlooking Villa Corner, home to the Town Hall, was transformed into a stage, hosting both a vast selection of firefighter equipment and stands displaying all the operational equipment used daily by the firefighters. A total of seventy firefighter staff, both active and volunteer, set up the exhibition, while also ensuring the safety and security of visitors. This impressive organizational effort, thanks to the professionalism of the men and women of the Fiamme Rosse, ensured that the event ran as smoothly and peacefully as possible. The morning allowed the many enthusiastic participants, children first and foremost, but also adults with barely concealed curiosity, to get up close to the fascinating vehicles on offer: the iconic "Fire Truck," the two ladder trucks, both the brand-new "three-dimensional" one and the more "classic" one that reaches a height of 37 meters at its maximum extension, the off-road vehicle, the command van, with its radio communication equipment. They also had the opportunity to touch and try on the helmet, Nomex uniform, breathing apparatus, nozzles, and all the other equipment provided by the various firefighter specialties. To delight the little ones, "Pompieropoli" was a special event within an event, designed specifically for children, where they were given the opportunity to immerse themselves and identify with a real firefighter for a few minutes, complete with uniform and helmet. A fun and educational journey that unfolds through balancing tests, "climbing" the classic Italian ladder provided by the National Fire Brigade, and reaching the platform at the top of the mini "Maneuver Castle," before descending while holding onto the iconic pole. The course continues with the use of the water hose, whose jet is intended to move the fire truck, and concludes with a taste of driving the miniature fire truck. Judging by the people queuing at the gazebo to register their children for this event, the success was simply enormous, and I'm sure more than one parent envied their son or daughter the opportunity to try this course. After a brief break for lunch, the more strictly institutional part began in the afternoon, with a parade of operators in operational gear, preceded by the Italian flag, who lined up in front of the authorities' stage. The first to speak was the Commander of the Venice Provincial Fire Brigade, Engineer Alberto Maiolo, who praised the work of the volunteers. He was followed by the Mayor of Mirano, Dr. Tiziano Baggio, who thanked the volunteers for their ongoing work on behalf of the citizens. Dr. Matteo Baldan, Councilor of the Veneto Regional Council, emphasized the importance of having a fire station that serves such a large area. The Prefect of Venice, Dr. Darco Pellos, concluded the series of remarks, emphasizing the value of the National Fire Brigade in the Civil Protection system. The inauguration and official delivery of the new APS (Autopompe-Tank) to the Mirano Volunteer Fire Brigade followed. The vehicle, based on a Volvo F290 chassis, is one of 300 of its kind purchased by the Ministry of the Interior with funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) as part of the fleet renewal and ecological transition process. Powered by a 9000cc engine, it has a top speed of 90 km/h and can carry 7,100 liters of water. With the institutional interlude concluded, the indomitable verve of the event's speaker, expert firefighter Lorenzo Cassarà, further raised the temperature in the square, whenever possible. The uniforms of the various firefighter specializations were presented: the classic one, the standard work or operational one, the firefighting one in Nomex and self-contained breathing apparatus, the SAF (Speleo Alpine Fluvial) one, the ATP (Self-Protection in Aquatic Environments), the USAR (Urban Search and Rescue), the NBCR (Nuclear Biological Chemical and Radiological), and finally the Canine Handlers with the children's favorite: Marylin the dog. This was followed by a simulation of rescuing an injured person at height, using the ladder trucks and also using the SUEM 118.
