Michael Jackson - Keep The Faith (80s Mix) [12" Version]
"No matter what, the most powerful thing in the world is the human mind and prayer, and belief in yourself and confidence and perseverance. No matter how many times you do it, you do it again until it’s right. And always believe in yourself. It was unknown this version existed. Although fans are familiar with the original version from the “Dangerous” album in 1991, it has been revealed that “Keep the Faith” (rumored to be originally titled “Got to Keep the Faith”) was originally written and recorded as far back as 1986-1987 during the Bad sessions with Siedah Garrett, Joe Kehr, his brothers Marlon & Randy, Quincy Jones and several others at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angelos. This song, along with “Man In The Mirror” were presented to Michael by Siedah Garrett, who wrote them both, in late 1986. He liked both songs, but felt that they were too similar in concept & lyrics, so ultimately “Man In The Mirror” was ultimately chosen for the upcoming “Bad” album. However, he still loved the uplifting church-feel message behind it, so they started working on the song after finishing “Man In The Mirror”. He began working further on this version around May of 1987 with Joe Kehr, Siedah Garrett, Quincy Jones, members of The Rag Tag Band, Sheila E., and his brothers Marlon & Randy, who suggested the interpolation of “Can You Feel It” be added. While the song runs around 6 minutes, the full-length version is an over 12 minute long “church jam” session, with extra breakdowns, solos and more vocals and adlibs. Due to time constraints, the song was edited down to multiple versions, to potentially fit on a vinyl if they ever decided to put it on an album or single. During one of the sessions for the song, Joe brought in Sheila E. for timbale percussion, while Michael brought in his sister Janet Jackson, who interpolated “What Have You Done For Me Lately” into the extended portion. The song was was unreleased at the time, however she replaced “Me” with “Him” to fit the religious subject. It is noted that there is a nod to James Brown, as his vocals are sampled from his song “I Refuse To Lose” from 1976. After the song was finished and edited down for vinyl pressing, they decided that it was going to be the B-side for the “Man In The Mirror” single. While they all liked this version, Michael wasn’t completely satisfied with the song by the end of the session due to his perfectionism; He still felt that it was too close to “Man In The Mirror” and he changed his mind on the “Can You Feel It” interpolation due to wanting to distance himself from his brothers at this point in his career. So ultimately, this version was shelved into the vault and cancelled as the B-side for “Man In The Mirror”. Michael would later on revisit the song for the ‘Dangerous’ album in 1990-1991, this one being produced by himself alongside Bruce Swedish. He eventually put it on the album, while this version remained unreleased. //// No copyright infringement intended. I do not own the rights to this music. #MichaelJackson #KeepTheFaith #80sMix
