Many men in Türkiye still live with their parents even after the age of 25. Is this a necessity or a choice? According to researchers, the high cost of living, high rents, and economic crises in big cities pose a significant obstacle for young people who want to leave their family homes. The question of how to leave the family home, in particular, is a preoccupation for many young people today. Doğukan is a computer programming graduate looking for a job as a business analyst. Oğuzcan is currently an unemployed software engineer. Oğuzcan and Doğukan shared their stories with us. Sometimes vulnerable, sometimes humorous, but always familiar… Is living in the family home a comfort or a dead end? Does staying home mean "not being an adult"? Is not being able to leave the family home a failure or a consequence imposed by the system? So, do young people really dislike jobs? Or is living in the family home without work becoming an increasingly common necessity? We asked them these questions and took the microphone to the streets. We talked with sociologist Cenk Özbay about masculinity, the issue of leaving home, and social expectations.
