Fred Renard is a sour, friendless man — thirty-six years of failure and a chip the size of the national debt — drinking in a late-night bar when a gentle old peddler named Pedott works the room with a suitcase of odds and ends. Pedott has a gift: he knows what a person needs before they do, and hands it over just before it's needed.
