INTRODUCING THE MAIN CHARACTER Khu Lien (192 AD) — A Cham official in Tuong Lam district, who led the rebellion to overthrow the Han dynasty and founded the Lam Ap state — the predecessor of Champa. His true identity and Cham name remain a mystery to this day. Che Man — Jaya Simhavarman III (reigned 1288–1307) — A brilliant diplomat, he proposed to Princess Huyen Tran and ceded the two provinces of O and Ri to Dai Viet in 1306, died suddenly in 1307 leaving behind an unending diplomatic tragedy. Princess Huyen Tran (circa 1287–?) — Daughter of King Tran Nhan Tong, married the Cham king Che Man by court order in 1306, widowed after a year and brought back to her country by Tran Khac Chung — her story became a symbol of diplomacy and personal tragedy. Che Bong Nga — Jaya Simhavarman VI (reigned 1360–1390) — The greatest and most fearsome warrior king of Champa, launched seven major attacks on Dai Viet, twice burned Thang Long (1371, 1378), killed King Tran Due Tong (1377), and died in battle on the Hai Trieu River in 1390 due to betrayal by General Ba Lau Ke who revealed his location. Le Thanh Tong (1442–1497) — The greatest king of the Le Dynasty, ascended the throne at the age of 18, promulgated the Hong Duc Law, personally led 260,000 troops to attack Vijaya in 1471, and ended the period of Champa independence in Central Vietnam.
