Charles Rennie Mackintosh is one of Scotland’s greatest cultural figures, celebrated internationally and influencing generations of artists, architects, and designers. He collaborated closely with his wife Margaret Macdonald on works that are both brilliant and breathtaking. The National Trust for Scotland is working to transform the understanding of Mackintosh and Macdonald through a groundbreaking program of public engagement and conservation centered on two of their most important cultural legacies: Hill House and Mack at the Willow. Chief Executive of The National Trust of Scotland, Philip Long, shares the Trust's plans to inspire creativity for new audiences and local communities through cutting-edge conservation, thoughtful interpretation, and digital outreach that will bring Mackintosh and Macdonald to life for audiences nationally and internationally. Philip Long joined the National Trust for Scotland in 2020. Previously he was founding Director of V&A Dundee, which opened in 2018 as a new international museum with a mission to enrich people’s lives through understanding of the designed world. Prior to V&A Dundee, Mr. Long was senior Curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. His academic specialization is in historic and contemporary Scottish and wider British art and design, on which he has curated many exhibitions and written widely, including on Charles Rennie Mackintosh. He received an OBE in the New Year’s Honour List in 2020 for services to Culture and Heritage.
