Fraunces Tavern - New York City history with Romancing Manhattan Tours
Just a few blocks Battery Park is Fraunces Tavern is one of the most historic buildings in NYC located here in the Financial District on the corner of Pearl and Broad Streets. It is one of our personal favorites. There’s a great tavern on the ground floor, The Porterhouse Brewing Company with live music on weekends… but the real attraction for us and other history lovers out there is the history. Although damaged by fire, bombed by a cannonball from the British and partially blown up during a terrorist attack in 1975… the building still stands and dates to back 1719 (although it has been extensively restored). Fraunces Tavern has always been closely associated with the cause for American independence. During the year that NYC was the 1st capital of the U.S. Fraunces Tavern housed the very first Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Treasury and the Department of War. It is where General George Washington bid an emotional farewell to his officers after the victory of the Revolutionary War. If only these walls could talk. On the upper floor is an often overlooked museum, opened in 1907 and a true hidden gem worth visiting. On view in the museum you’ll find many artifacts relating to Colonial America and the American Revolution. Fraunces Tavern is truly a hidden gem and well worth a visit!
