NKP 765, The New River Train (1988)

The New River Train documents the 1988 New River Train with Nickel Plate Road 765. From 1968 until 2018, the Collis P. Huntington Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society sponsored a series of Fall foliage trips through the spectacular New River Gorge of West Virginia. From 1978 until 1994, the New River Train was pulled by several different Steam Locomotives. The first of these Locomotives to run through the New River Gorge was Ex. Reading T1. 2101 (Then painted in a Chessie System paint scheme, it would only operate through the New River Gorge once in 1978 as part of the Chessie Steam Special that ran for 2 seasons over the B&O & C&O from 1977 to 1978), followed by C&O 614 (Which operated a trip over the route in 1980 as part of the Chessie Safety Express), NKP 765 (Which operated these trips for the longest tenure, beginning in 1984 & lasted all the way up to 1993) & finally rounding it out with Milwaukee Road 261 (it was leased by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society for the '94 trips, since 765 was down & due for another overhaul). Since 1994, the trips over the old C&O through the New River Gorge have been powered by Diesels. The New River Train made it's last runs in 2018 & was succeeded by the Autumn Colors Express.
