Today I will tell the story of a person who was a perfect example of Enlightenment thinkers. Angelo Suleiman was highly educated and multilingual, circulated in the most intellectual circles of Vienna, inspired a character by Mozart, and was a friend of Emperor Joseph II, one of the enlightened despots who tried to improve the lives of his people during this period. He is also remembered to this day in Freemasonry for having introduced intellectual discussions into the Masonic rite. Despite everything, when Suleiman died, he received no tributes or a grand funeral. Instead, his body was confiscated, stuffed, and turned into a museum piece, as if he were not even human. This happened because Suleiman was Black. Born in Africa and enslaved as a child, he demonstrated that color does not determine intelligence, but he never stopped being seen as a curiosity, even after his death.
