The Medes were an ancient people who inhabited the region known as Media, a strategic and imposing territory located west and south of the Caspian Sea. The Medes' territory consisted of a large mountainous plateau, with altitudes ranging from nine hundred to fifteen hundred meters above sea level. The history of the Medes begins at the end of the second millennium BC, when Iranian tribes began to emerge and settle in northwestern Iran, an area that would prove fundamental in the formation of what would later become known as the Median Kingdom.
