Steve Smith & Vital Information: “The Perfect Date” from the NEW PERSPECTIVE album (2025)

We recorded the original version on the 1988 Vital Info album called FIAFIAGA (CELEBRATION). Since that time, the song has gone through many phases as each incarnation of Vital Information had its own interpretation of the piece. It’s a fun tune that showcases everyone in the group and there is an extended drum solo at the end! Because I’ve played “The Perfect Date” hundreds of times, I needed a break from playing it and wanted to focus on new music, so we took it out of the book for a few years. Enter Manuel Valera, who took over the keyboard chair in 2020, and we now have a transformed version of “The Perfect Date” that is far different from any previous version. Manuel has a particular gift of taking a tune apart and reconstructing it in a unique way. With Manuel’s new perspective of the tune, it’s back in the book and we are rising to the challenge of playing this arrangement with a fresh energy and vitality! Manuel on keyboards, Janek Gwizdala on bass and myself on drums had a great time recording this for NEW PERSPECTIVE on June 29, 2023 at Studio Mozart in Little Falls, NJ.
