Newport News Shipbuilding 138th Anniversary

Jan. 28, 2024, marks 138 years since Collis P. Huntington founded Newport News Shipbuilding. On that day in 1886, the General Assembly of Virginia authorized a charter allowing what was then known as the Chesapeake Dry Dock and Construction Co. to purchase land, build a dry dock and begin building and repairing ships. Over the years, generations of shipbuilders have kept Huntington’s vision alive – including the more than 25,000 shipbuilders on NNS’ team today.
