He is a member of the scientific committee of "Historia Religionum." He has conducted his research in Japan, focusing on Buddhist and Shinto ascetic and esoteric traditions. For outstanding academic achievement, he was awarded the "Order of the Rising Sun, Golden Rays with Roses" by the Japanese government in 2012. He has also studied the new languages of contemporary religiosity and the problems posed by the coexistence of different faiths. His numerous books include the seminal Il pensiero giapponese classico (Classical Japanese Thought), published by Einaudi in 2014; Itineraries in the Sacred: The Japanese Religious Experience, published by Libreria Editrice Cafoscarina in 2006; Rethinking Japan Vols. 1 and 2, published by Taylor and Francis in 2014; and Death and Desire in Contemporary Japan: Representing, Practicing, Performing (Cà Foscari Publishing House, 2017). His recent works include: I linguaggi dell’assoluto (Mimesis, Milan 2017); Laughing at the Gods, Laughing with the Gods: Theological Humor (Il Mulino, Bologna 2020).
