There was a man who faced a Shimazu army of 50,000 with only 763 men. In 1586, the Shimazu Yoshihisa and the other four Shimazu brothers, on the verge of unifying Kyushu, invaded northern Kyushu to destroy Otomo Sorin. The man holed up in Iwaya Castle, on the front lines, was Takahashi Jōun, a renowned general of the Otomo family. Rejecting surrender offers and refusing a peace treaty in exchange for sparing his own son's life, Jōun and his 763 soldiers fought a desperate battle against the Shimazu army for 14 days. And on July 27th, every single soldier in the castle perished. However, this 14-day "delay" would change the fate of Kyushu. This video depicts, based on historical documents, "Sorin's Journey to Kyoto," when Otomo Sorin, cornered by the Shimazu invasion, sought aid from Toyotomi Hideyoshi at Osaka Castle, and the "Battle of Iwaya Castle," which triggered the Kyushu campaign. This video provides a dramatic yet historically accurate explanation of the events behind this historic moment, which is often summarized in a single line in textbooks: "Ieyasu submits to Hideyoshi."
