Nigeria's Minister of Defence, Retired General Christopher Musa, has announced that Nigeria is opening a new tri-border military sector with Benin Republic and Niger — and that he plans to visit Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, all 3 members of the Alliance of Sahel States, in the coming months. On paper, this is West Africa finally closing ranks against JNIM and ISWAP. But think about the timing. Burkina Faso severed diplomatic relations with France on June 26. The AES states have deposited their withdrawal from the ICC. And in the same week Musa spoke, the United States announced it has withdrawn the majority of its troops from Nigeria.
