Supreme Court Ends Term With Major Immigration and Title IX Decisions
The U.S. Supreme Court ended its term with two landmark decisions affecting immigration and transgender athletes. In one of its most closely watched rulings, the Court struck down President Donald Trump's executive order limiting birthright citizenship, reaffirming that children born in the United States are citizens under the 14th Amendment regardless of their parents' immigration status. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts relied on longstanding constitutional precedent tracing back to the Court's 1898 decision in United States v. Wong Kim Ark. The ruling preserves automatic U.S. citizenship at birth and rejects the Trump administration's effort to reinterpret the Citizenship Clause. President Trump criticized the decision and urged Congress to pursue alternative legislative or constitutional changes. In a separate 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court also upheld state laws restricting transgender athletes from competing on girls' and women's sports teams. The decision allows existing bans in dozens of states to remain in effect and marks another significant ruling in the ongoing national debate over Title IX, transgender rights and school athletics. _______________ Follow KFDM on social media: KFDM on Facebook: / kfdmnews KFDM on Twitter: / kfdmnews Subscribe to KFDM on YouTube: / @newsonkfdm For all of the day’s top local and national news, visit https://kfdm.com/ Watch our live newscasts and other live video at https://kfdm.com/watch Have a news tip?
