Founded in the 1650s by Patriarch Nikon, the monastery was conceived as a symbolic recreation of the Holy Land. Nikon envisioned a sacred landscape where Russian pilgrims could experience Jerusalem without traveling thousands of kilometers. Even the surrounding hills and river were given biblical names. At the heart of the complex rises the magnificent Resurrection Cathedral, inspired by Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Its soaring rotunda, colourful ceramic decoration, and unique architecture make it unlike almost any other church in Russia. The monastery endured severe damage during World War II, but decades of restoration have brought it back to life. Today, visitors can once again admire its grand walls, towers, and beautifully restored interiors.
