Gansu 4K HDR - Dunhuang City the oasis in the vast Gobi Desert - China Scenic Drive

Today's city tour comes to Dunhuang City, Jiuquan City, Gansu Province, driving in this lonely but extraordinary city in the northwest desert of China. Dunhuang City, also known as Shazhou, is located in the northwest of Gansu Province and the westernmost end of the Hexi Corridor. It is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Gansu Province, People's Republic of China, and is administered by Jiuquan City. Dunhuang City is located on the northern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The terrain slopes from southwest to northeast. The surrounding areas of the city are high and the middle is low, so it is called the "Dunhuang Basin". It has a typical warm temperate arid climate with little rainfall. In the ancient times about 4,000 years ago, the ancestors of mankind lived and multiplied in the Dunhuang area. In the Spring and Autumn Period, Dunhuang was called Guazhou. During the Qin and Han Dynasties, the Xiongnu, who dominated the northern desert, rose to power. During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty, Zhang Qian's "opening up" journey to the Western Regions, from then on, the Silk Road was opened. In the sixth year of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty (111 BC), Dunhuang County was established. In the fourteenth year of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty (640 AD), Li Shimin removed the obstacles on the East-West Avenue, mainly the Western Turks, to ensure the smooth flow of the Silk Road. Dunhuang was liberated in September 1949, and the Dunhuang County People's Government was established on October 7 of the same year, under the jurisdiction of Jiuquan Prefecture. In September 1987, Dunhuang County was abolished and Dunhuang City was established. Dunhuang culture is the epitome of traditional Chinese culture. It has lasted for nearly 2,000 years, is the world's largest and most complete art treasure house. Dunhuang City has many famous places of interest, including the Mogao Grottoes, a world cultural heritage site, the Crescent Moon Lake, a desert wonder, and the Yangguan Pass and Yumen Pass, two major border passes on the ancient Silk Road.
