ВСЕРЕДИНІ Останнього Німецького Кіножурналу Другої Світової Війни | 22 березня 1945 року
On March 22, 1945, the German newsreel known as Die Deutsche Wochenschau ran one of its bleakest and most desperate issues of the entire Second World War. By then, the Third Reich was on the verge of total collapse. Soviet troops were advancing on Berlin from the east, while American, British, and Canadian armies were crossing the Rhine from the west. Yet the newsreel still tried to project an image of resistance and absolute certainty of victory. The cameras showed columns of German soldiers moving through ruins, Hitler Youth teenagers preparing improvised defenses, and officers talking about a “final resistance,” even as the military reality became increasingly catastrophic. Propaganda remained the main goal of the newsreel. Scenes were carefully selected to avoid showing the actual chaos that had gripped Germany. While many cities were reduced to rubble by Allied bombing, the voice-over insisted on presenting each defensive battle as a “heroic temporary victory.” New tanks, anti-aircraft batteries, and soldiers armed with Panzerfausts were shown defending villages and roads. Even in the final months of the war, the regime was still trying to convince the population that there was a way to change the course of the conflict through self-sacrifice and absolute loyalty to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi state. One of the most striking aspects of that episode was the contrast between the footage and the everyday reality of the Germans. Millions of civilians lived without permanent light, in conditions of extreme food shortages, and under constant fear of air raids. Many adult men had already died or been captured, so teenagers and the elderly were sent to the front as part of the Volkssturm, an improvised militia created in the final months of the war. Despite this, the newsreel featured forced smiles, optimistic speeches, and military ceremonies, designed to bolster the morale of a nation that was slowly realizing that the end was imminent. Today, the final period of Die Deutsche Wochenschau is seen as a historical document, reflecting the psychological and political collapse of the Nazi regime. That footage from March 1945 shows not only the fighting and the soldiers, but also the government’s desperate attempt to control public perception while everything around it was collapsing. A few weeks after that broadcast, Berlin would be completely surrounded by the Red Army, Adolf Hitler would commit suicide in his bunker, and the Third Reich would officially cease to exist. The newsreel remained the final echo of a propaganda machine that tried to maintain the illusion of power even as Germany was already in its final days.
