The 12-volume literary work recounts the birth and development of the SOKA KYOIKU GAKKAI ("Educational Society for the Creation of Value," later simply SOKA GAKKAI), founded in 1930 by Tsunesaburo Makiguchi in collaboration with his disciple Josei Toda. In 1976, Matsuda, who had become famous a few years earlier for directing the film "TORA, TORA, TORA!", directed a second installment of this cinematic opus, which, with a total running time of over five hours, covers the events from July 3, 1945, when Toda was released from prison, to May 3, 1951, when Toda himself became the second president of the Soka Gakkai. The actor who plays Toda, Tetsuro Tamba, known to the general public for his role in the James Bond film "You Only Live Twice," passed away on September 24, 2006, at the age of 84. The film also depicts episodes from the life of Nichiren Daishonin, played by Tetsuya Nakadai, who in 1980 won the title role in Akira Kurosawa's film "Kagemusha," which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. In the novel, as in the film, the author (Daisaku Ikeda) also appears under the pseudonym Shin'ichi Yamamoto. Although some secondary events or narrative twists in the film are the result of the screenwriters' creativity, the main events recounted here are faithful to reality and allow us to understand the spirit that has inspired the organization since its inception. The purpose of the Soka Gakkai has always been to enable the correct practice and dissemination of Nichiren Daishonin's teachings, avoiding becoming part of what in Japan is called "funeral Buddhism," a historical remnant that has now become a sterile social system centered around tourism and funeral ceremonies. Nevertheless, the Soka Gakkai does not hold "exclusive" rights to Nichiren Daishonin's teachings, as there are several schools that adhere to the Daishonin's teachings, albeit with very different doctrinal interpretations. None of these, however, has ever managed to significantly impact society, creating a system of values ​​in the cultural, social, and educational fields capable of equaling the great Soka Gakkai movement. This distinction is important in a historical moment like the current one, in which, thanks especially to new technologies, any religious teaching or theory can gain media visibility regardless of its actual substance and tradition. Viewing this film, shown here in a shortened version, is therefore intended to be an opportunity to discover, or perhaps rediscover, the intent that inspired the founding and development of the "Society for the Creation of Value." #precious_tower #buddhism #sgi
